QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's softball senior pitcher Kat Lawrence attended the annual BIG EAST Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) meetings Sept. 24-25 in Providence, R.I. Sixteen student-athletes, each representing the 16 BIG EAST schools, and one Division I National SAAC representative attended the meetings to share ideas and insights for SAAC activities and involvement and participate in a community service event.
"I was glad to represent St. John's at the annual meetings," Lawrence said. "We had a lot of fun, listened to a great keynote speaker and discussed legislation. We went over community service plans and there were some great ideas that I have brought back to St. John's."
Children's Friend coordinated the community service event. The student-athletes visited the Children's Friend Friendship Head Start Center and provided games, activities and snacks for 75 children from age 1-6.
Clinical sports psychologist John Sullivan, Psy.D, was this year's guest speaker at the annual meeting. The SAAC members discussed legislation during the meetings, including a plan to organize an event for Student-Athlete Day in April that will feature participation from all NCAA Division I schools.
"This is the second year that Kat has been a representative for SAAC and, as an Executive Board member this year, she has been very vocal and involved in promoting the work of the committee," said Lucy Pesce, Director of Leadership Development for Student-Athletes. "These conference-wide meetings are a great opportunity to share ideas with other schools and bring back suggestions to implement at St. John's."
The BIG EAST Conference Student-Athlete Advisory Committee (SAAC) serves as the voice of student-athletes hailing from 16 member institutions and competing in 24 conference-sponsored championships. In doing so, the committee's mission is to improve the communication with all student-athletes at member institutions as well as between institutions, take an active role understanding and providing feedback regarding NCAA and Conference legislation, and promote student-athlete well-being, academic achievement, personal development and community service.
