Kvilhaug To Hold Winter Pitching And Hitting Clinics

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's head softball coach Amy Kvilhaug and the Red Storm coaching staff will hold three winter softball clinics on Jan. 29, 2011, at Carnesecca Arena for young players looking to improve on pitching and hitting.
Clinic participants will have the opportunity to learn from St. John's exceptional softball staff and refine the skills needed to play softball at a high level. Kvilhaug and assistant coaches Andy Russo and Brette Reagan will share their years of softball experience and expertise with these young athletes who are hoping to improve their skills.
The Amy Kvilhaug Winter Beginner Pitching Clinic will run from 9 a.m. to 10:15 a.m. This clinic is open to athletes between the ages of eight and 18 and it is geared toward those interested in learning the fundamentals of fastpitch softball pitching. Kvilhaug and members of the St. John's pitching staff will stress the fundamentals, mechanics, mental aspects of being a pitcher, practice skills and take-home drills that will allow beginners to continue to hone their abilities. Participants should bring their own gloves, cleats, athletic shoes (or turfs) and catchers.
The Amy Kvilhaug Winter Advanced Pitching Clinic will follow from 10:30 a.m. to 12 p.m. This clinic is for high school or highly-skilled middle school pitchers between the ages of 13 and 18 who aim to play at a high level for travel ball teams and ultimately reach the collegiate level. Kvilhaug and the Red Storm pitching staff will focus on the fundamentals and work with players on the development of advanced skills. Pitchers will learn and improve on several different pitches, such as the change-up, curve, screw, drop and rise. The STJ staff will also share insight on the mental aspects of the game and what it takes to succeed at a high level. Participants should bring their own gloves, cleats, athletic shoes (or turfs) and catchers.
The Amy Kvilhaug Winter Hitting Clinic will run from 12:15 p.m. to 2:15 p.m. Red Storm coaches will provide instruction for hitters between the ages of eight and 18. The hitting clinic will begin with a 30-minute instructional session. The remaining time will consist of station work. Participants should bring their own bats, helmets and batting gloves. Loaned hitting equipment will be supplied if needed.
The registration fee for the Winter Beginner Pitching Clinic is $65. The fee for the Winter Advanced Pitching Clinic is $75 and the fee for the Winter Hitting Clinic is $85. Those who sign up for the hitting clinic paired with one of the pitching clinics will receive a $10 discount.
