Gray Squad Takes IWS Game One, 12-5

QUEENS, N.Y. - The gray squad defeated the red team, 12-5, in game one of the Red-Gray Intrasquad World Series. Brendan Lobban allowed four runs, three earned, and had three strikeouts in 5.0 innings of work to earn the win, while Matt Wessinger had three RBI to lead the gray team in the seven-inning contest.
A Jeremy Baltz RBI groundout gave the gray squad an early 1-0 lead in the first inning.
The gray squad extended its lead to 5-0 with a four-run second inning that was highlighted by a Lincoln Sanborn two-run double and a Mike Lonsdale RBI double.
The red team plated two runs in the bottom of third to close to within 5-2, but a Wessinger two-run double highlighted a four-run fifth inning as the gray squad went up 9-2.
Scott Ferrara plated a run with a sacrifice fly in bottom of the fifth inning as the red squad answered with two runs to close to within 9-4.
After the red squad added a run in the bottom of the sixth, the gray squad took a 12-5 lead in the top of the seventh as Kyle Richardson, Wessinger and Baltz put together three-straight RBI singles.
Sterling Frand allowed one run in 2.0 innings of work to combine with Lobban on the gray team's four-hitter. Richardson, Baltz and Sanborn had two RBI apiece to pace the gray offense.
Pat Talbut, Jimmy Brennan and Ferrara had an RBI each, while Matt O'Herron was 2-for-3 for the red team.
The teams take to the field at 3 p.m. on Oct. 27 for game two of the series.
