QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore guard Shenneika Smith was named to the BIG EAST honor roll on Monday after averaging 20.0 points and 10.0 rebounds per game, following a 2-0 week for the then-No. 22/24 Red Storm.
The honor is Smith's first this year. As a rookie in 2009-10, Smith garnered BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades three times.
A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Smith shot 55.9 percent from the field(19-of-34) and 66.7 percent from 3-point range (2-for-3). She recorded four steals, three blocks and one assist, playing 69 minutes for St. John's.
She tied or set four personal career records and scored her 500th career-point with her last shot against Nicholls State (Nov. 26).
Smith scored 22 points, a season-high, and added nine rebounds against Nicholls State, just shy of her fifth career double-double. She also tied career highs in three categories with 10 field goals, two 3-pointers and three blocks. By the end of the first half, Smith had already tallied 12 points, five rebounds.
She has recorded double-figure scoring efforts in four of six games this season. And so far in her two-year career, St. John's is 4-1 when Smith scores 20 points or more
Smith Leads the squad in scoring overall and is tied for 11th in the BIG EAST after her 20.0 ppg week.
Smith's Honor Roll mention is the first league honor for St. John's this season.
Next up, the Red Storm will match up with St. Bonaventure tonight at the Reilly Center in a Monday night contest. Tip off is slated for 7 p.m. It is the first meeting between the two teams.
