QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's sophomore guard Shenneika Smith was named to the BIG EAST honor roll on Monday after averaging 14.0 points and 7.5 rebounds per game in a 2-0 week for the then-No. 20/21 Red Storm.
The honor is Smith's second this year. As a rookie in 2009-10, Smith garnered BIG EAST Freshman of the Week accolades three times.
A Brooklyn, N.Y. native, Smith scored in double-figures in both wins, went 2-for-5 from the 3-point line and was a perfect 2-of-2 from the free throw line. She recorded five assists, one block and three steals.
The sophomore recorded her second double-double of the season (13 points, 10 rebounds) in St. John's first conference win at Seton Hall (Dec. 8), becoming the second member of the Red Storm to have two or more double-doubles this season. At Rhode Island (Dec. 11), Smith shot .545 from the field en route to 15 points.
Smith leads the squad in scoring with 13.7 points per game. She ranks No. 18 on the BIG EAST scoring list, and 13th in rebounding (7.4 rpg).
Smith's Honor Roll mention is the second league honor for St. John's this season.
Next up, St. John's will host the annual STJ-Chartwell's Holiday Festival. The Red Storm will welcome Southern Mississippi, UCSB and Fresno State to Queens, N.Y. in the four-team tournament. STJ will face Southern Mississippi in the opening game on Dec. 18 at 1 p.m., with Fresno State and UCSB to follow. The winners will match up in the championship on Sunday, Dec. 19 at 2 p.m. The consolation game will be played at noon, prior to the championship.
