QUEENS, N.Y. - The fifth annual St. John's Baseball Bullpen Winter Banquet will be held on Wednesday, Feb. 9 and will feature Bobby Valentine. The event will be held at the New York Athletic Club in Manhattan and will begin with a cocktail reception at 6 p.m., followed by dinner at 7 p.m.
"We are extremely excited to have Bobby Valentine speak at this year's Bullpen Winter Banquet," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "Bobby is an outstanding speaker and a great baseball mind, and I know that those in attendance will thoroughly enjoy listening to him."
In addition to the reception, a silent auction will be held with the chance to bid on a variety of priceless items. All proceeds from the evening will directly benefit the Red Storm baseball program.
Tickets for the event are priced at $250 per person and tables of 10 are available for $2,500. Please RSVP by Feb. 3 to Elizabeth Austin at austine@stjohns.edu or 718-990-2548.
The manager of the New York Mets when the squad won the N.L. Pennant in 2000 and reached the postseason in consecutive seasons (1999 & 2000) for the first time in club history, Valentine won 1,117 games in a 15-year managing career that included stints with both the Mets and Texas Rangers. Selected by the Los Angeles Dodgers as the fifth overall pick in the 1968 draft, Valentine played for the Dodgers, Angels, Padres, Mets and Mariners as part of a 10-year career in the majors. ESPN recently announced that Valentine, who also spent seven seasons (1995, 2004-09) as the manager of the Chiba Lotte Marines and won the Japan Series title in 2005, will join Dan Shulman and Orel Hershiser in the booth for the network's "Sunday Night Baseball" broadcasts.
The St. John's baseball team opens its 2011 campaign on Feb. 18 in Clearwater, Fla., against Minnesota as part of the BIG EAST-Big Ten Challenge. The Red Storm will host Albany in its home-opener on March 16.
