QUEENS, N.Y. - Amber Curry knocked a two-run home run in third inning, Kat Lawrence turned in 5.2 scoreless innings in relief work and the St. John's softball team shut down Seton Hall, 4-0, in the third game of their season series Sunday at Red Storm Field.
Before the game, St. John's honored three of its greatest softball alumnae in Ginny Peiser (1981-83), Tara Felix O'Connell (1991-94) and Jo Sherlock Leidner (2003-06). Head coach Amy Kvilhaug presented all three with plaques in recognition of their outstanding contributions to the St. John's softball program.
The Red Storm (14-20, 3-5 BIG EAST) wasted no time to impress its distinguished guests, taking a 1-0 lead in the first inning. With Chelsea Durning on second base, Kacee Cox ripped a double down the left field line to drive in the first run of the game.
In the third, Curry, who went 1-of-4 on the day, sent a 1-2 pitch from Seton Hall starter Ashley Forsyth over the wall in straightaway center, plating Durning from second base and extending STJ's lead to 3-0. The homer was Curry's third on the season. The Red Storm tagged on one more run three batters later when Shauntaine Harris drove in Kristi Cady from second base with a single up the middle.
Lawrence (8-6) entered the game with two on in the second inning to relieve STJ starter Linzee Sumrall. Lawrence was masterful in the circle the rest of the way, striking out three and holding Seton Hall (11-20, 2-7 BIG EAST) to three hits over 5.2 shutout frames. Sumrall tossed 1.1 scoreless innings with one strikeout.
St. John's freshman middle infield duo of shortstop Chrissy Montez and second baseman Curry turned a pair of crisp double plays to back Lawrence's strong effort in the circle. With no outs and a runner on first in the fourth, Montez fielded a grounder to short and made the toss to second where Curry hopped quickly on the bag before hurling the ball to first baseman Stacia Dopudja. The two teamed up for a 4-6-3 double play to close out the sixth. Curry fielded a one-out grounder up the middle and lobbed the ball to second where Montez was waiting to rifle it to first.
Durning went 2-of-3 on the day with one double and two runs scored. Cox was 2-of-4 from the plate with one RBI and one double. Julia Sanchez was also 2-of-3.
Forsyth fell to 6-8 with the loss after throwing 2.1 innings and allowing four earned runs. The Pirates also received 2.1 innings from Danielle Zanzalari and 1.1 innings from Katie Stilwell.
St. John's next hosts a doubleheader against DePaul on Wednesday starting at noon at Red Storm Field.
