St. John's Soars Past Connecticut, 5-2

STORRS, Conn. - The St. John's women's tennis team played a two of matches in Storrs this weekend, returning a 1-1 record against a pair of BIG EAST Conference opponents to finish the regular season at 9-11, 5-3 BIG EAST. The Red Storm defeated host Connecticut, 5-2 on Friday afternoon before falling, 4-3 to Pittsburgh on Saturday morning.
Against Connecticut, Ece Firat and Jenny Yonkus came away with the only doubles win for STJ, with an 8-3 decision at No. 1. The Huskies went on to earn the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, Ira Aleksova defeated Kelley LoRusso, 6-2, 7-5 at No. 1 for the first St. John's point. At No.2 Joanna Zwirbulis knocked off Alli Campitiello, 1-6, 6-4, 6-0 in a three-setter for her 15th win of the season.
Firat won in three sets over Emily Herb, 6-1, 5-7, 6-0 at No. 3 and Jenny Yonkus earned a 6-1, 6-7, 6-3 decision over Alexa Gregory to give St. John's a 4-1 match lead.
Ksenia Mikhaylova won her sixth match in a row to give the Red Storm its fifth and final point after a 6-1, 6-4 victory at No. 5 against Abby McKeon.
Facing the Panthers on Saturday, St. John's lost a tough, 4-3 decision at the hands of Pittsburgh in its final match of the regular season.
Firat and Yonkus won, 8-4 at No. 1 doubles before the Panthers earned the doubles point with wins at No. 2 and No. 3.
In singles play, the Red Storm tallied three points, but the doubles point made the difference for the Panthers.
No. 3 Firat won in straight sets, 6-2, 6-0 and No. 5 Mikhaylova earned a 6-1, 6-1 victory for her seventh-consecutive win.
Nakita Austin claimed the final point for St. John's at No. 6 with a 6-4, 7-6(5) win.
The Red Storm will now prepare for the BIG EAST Championship, which begins on Thursday, April 22 in South Bend, Ind.
