QUEENS, N.Y. - The 2010 St. John's volleyball schedule is one full of excitement as the Red Storm meets five 2009 NCAA Tournament participants, including two in non-conference action this fall.
"Whenever you can get the defending three-time national champion on your schedule, along with four other NCAA Tournament teams, you know your season will be exciting and challenging," said head coach Joanne Persico. "We are looking forward to having a full squad this year and making a run at a Big East Title for our fifth time in six years."
St. John's kicks off its 2010 schedule with a trip to West Point on Aug. 27 for the Army Invitational. The Black Knights won the Patriot League title in 2009 and competed in the NCAA Tournament a year ago.
After its opening weekend, the Red Storm has a busy week, with its home-opener and the St. John's Classic. STJ hosts Stony Brook in its first home match of the season on Tuesday, Aug. 31, while the St. John's Classic begins on Friday, Sept. 3. The 2010 St. John's Classic expanded to five teams and will include St. Francis (NY), Columbia, Manhattan and Denver. The tournament will feature two courts for the first time in its history.
The Queens-Nassau Cup will be up next for the Red Storm. This annual match with Hofstra comes complete with area bragging rights. With the win in 2009, St. John's took the 8-7 lead in the all-time series.
Next up on the non-conference slate are tournaments at Buffalo and Penn State, home of the three-time defending national champions. The pair of tournaments are the final non-conference contests of the season before the start of BIG EAST action.
STJ opens the BIG EAST portion of its schedule at home with Villanova on Sept. 24 to start a three-match conference homestand. The Red Storm plays host to Cincinnati and Louisville on Oct. 1 & 3, respectively, two teams that participated in the 2009 NCAA Tournament.
After three matches at home, the Red Storm hits the road for the next three, facing Marquette, on Oct. 8, Syracuse on Oct. 10 and Connecticut on Oct. 16. STJ returns to Queens for local action, hosting Rutgers on Oct. 22 and Seton Hall on Oct. 24.
Hitting the road again, St. John's will travel to Notre Dame on Oct. 30 and DePaul on Oct. 31 for back-to-back matches before coming back to New York to take on USF on Nov. 5 and Georgetown on Nov. 7. The Red Storm plays its final two matches on the road at West Virginia on Nov. 12 and Pittsburgh on Nov. 14.
The 2010 BIG EAST Championship begins on Friday Nov. 19 and continues to Sunday, Nov. 21, hosted by Pittsburgh at the Fitzgerald Field House.
