LOUISVILLE, Ky. - St. John's junior catcher Kacee Cox was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team as announced at the conference's annual championship banquet Wednesday in Louisville, Ky.
Cox had a historic 2010 season at the plate for the Red Storm. The Simi Valley, Calif., posted a .404 batting average, becoming just the fifth STJ player to hit .400 or better in a season. She also finished the year with 46 RBI, becoming just the sixth St. John's player all-time to drive in 40 runs in a single season and coming to within just two RBI of tying the STJ record.
Cox hit a team-high nine home runs for the third consecutive year, pushing her career total to 27. She also led St. John's with 61 hits, 10 doubles, 98 total bases, a .649 slugging percentage, a .471 on-base percentage and 250 putouts. Cox's 23 RBI and 25 hits in BIG EAST play both ranked fourth in the conference. She also ranked among the BIG EAST's best with five home runs (tied for eighth), a .682 slugging percentage (eighth) and a .379 batting average (12th) in conference play.
Cox was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll three times this season. She earned weekly conference honors in Week 1 when she posted a .533 batting average with one home run, two doubles and three RBI over four games at the Charleston Southern Tournament (Feb. 19-20). Cox was recognized for the second time in Week 2 following a strong showing in four games at the Georgia Softball Classic (Feb. 26-28). She hit .692 on the week with two home runs, one double and six RBI. In Week 7, the BIG EAST tabbed Cox for weekly honors after she batted .500 with two homers, one double and 11 RBI over one game against Fordham and a three-game series at Connecticut.
Cox's All-BIG EAST Second Team selection marks the sixth all-conference team honor for St. John's under the direction of fourth-year head coach Amy Kvilhaug.
St. John's finished the year 18-33 and 6-16 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm opened the season 4-1, tying for the best start in program history. St. John's was previously 4-1 in 1992 and 2004.
The Red Storm's biggest win of the year was its 2-0 victory over BIG EAST regular season co-champion DePaul in game two of their doubleheader on April 14. It was St. John's second victory over the Blue Demons all-time and its first since besting them in 2003. The win snapped an eight-game losing streak against DePaul.
