GREENSBORO, N.C. - St. John's junior Priscilla Frederick finished seventh in the high jump at the NCAA Track & Field East Regionals, qualifying her for the NCAA Championships. Thursday was the first of three days for the meet held at N.C. A&T's Irwin Belk Track in Greensboro, N.C.
Frederick entered the day tied for the second seed after notching a career-best jump of 1.84 meters at the ECAC Championships.
A native of Sicklerville, N.J., Frederick cleared the bar in first attempt at 1.69 meters, and made both of her second attempts at 1.74 and 1.78 meters respectively. The drama came on Frederick's last jump as she needed all three attempts to clear 1.81 meters.
Of the 44 competitors in the high jump, only seven successfully navigated the bar at the final height. Both Frederick and LSU's Brittani Carter, who finished fifth at the Indoor Championships, cleared 1.81 meters on their third attempt. Connecticut's Carin Knight, the reigning BIG EAST Champion, did not make 1.78 meters and finished 14th.
The top 12 finishers advance to the NCAA Outdoor Championships in Eugene, Ore. on Wednesday, June 9.
This year marks the third consecutive season that Frederick will represent St. John's in the high jump at the Outdoor NCAA Championships. Frederick earned All-America status by finishing eighth at the Indoor NCAA Championships this past spring.
