QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's freshman second baseman Amber Curry was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll as announced by the conference office Monday.
This is the first time Curry has received BIG EAST Weekly honors. She is the fourth St. John's player to be named to the weekly honor roll this season, joining Kacee Cox (three times), Kat Lawrence (twice) and Kristi Cady.
Curry was St. John's top offensive player of the week, hitting .353 (6-of-17) with three home runs, one double, six RBI and five runs scored. Her slugging percentage on the week was a whopping .941 and her on-base percentage was .421.
St. John's posted victories in Curry's two multi-hit games. On April 28, STJ defeated Iona, 4-3, at Red Storm Field thanks in part to Curry's 2-of-4 effort at the plate. The freshman second baseman's RBI groundout to short in the fourth inning extended the Red Storm's lead to 3-0. Curry led off the seventh with a double to right field and scored the winning run on Kacee Cox's walk-off single up the middle.
Curry's best game of the week was the second game of the St. John's-Rutgers series May 1 at Red Storm Field. Curry, who had hit a home run in game one, knotted game two at 3-3 in the fifth when she blasted a 1-0 pitch to left for a two-run home run. In the seventh, Curry hit a two-out walk-off solo homer to left, lifting St. John's to a 4-3 victory.
On the season, Curry is batting .317 with six home runs, six doubles, two triples, 21 RBI, 37 runs scored, 13 walks and 20 steals. Her 20 steals ranks third on St. John's all-time, single-season stolen bases list. Curry is just one of three STJ players all-time to record 20 steals in a single season.
St. John's closes out its regular season schedule next weekend when it hosts a three-game series against BIG EAST rival Notre Dame at Red Storm Field. The Red Storm will celebrate Senior Day May 8 when it takes on the Fighting Irish in a doubleheader starting at noon. The two teams will square off again for a single game May 9 at 11 a.m.
