QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's softball head coach Amy Kvilhaug has announced the hiring of assistant coach Brette Reagan.
"I believe the addition of Brette to our program will be an integral piece to the continued improvement and future success we expect to achieve," said Kvilhaug, who enters her fifth season leading the Red Storm. "She brings a great deal of energy, knowledge and experience to the position. I am humbled by what she has achieved at the highest level of our sport and cannot wait for her to share her experiences, knowledge and ideas with the players and staff."
Reagan, a former standout third baseman at Baylor, will work with the Red Storm's defense. She will assist in recruiting and perform various other administrative duties for St. John's softball.
Reagan spent the 2009 season as a student assistant for the Baylor softball team, which finished the year at 28-25. She assisted with hitting and infield, coordinated infield practices, worked individually with hitters and helped scout opponents. Regan has helped develop younger players over the past four years. She was the head coach of the TX Stix ATX 18U Gold softball team in the summer of 2008, has served as a private hitting and fielding instructor since 2007 and helped as an instructor at Baylor's softball camps from 2006-2010.
Prior to serving as an assistant, Reagan was a Baylor standout from 2006-09 and emerged as one of the top hitters in the country. She was a three-time NFCA All-American (2006-08), three-time All-Midwest Region first-team honoree (2006-08), four-time All-Big 12 honoree (2006-09) and the 2006 Big 12 Freshman of the Year. Reagan, who starred in 211 games, was an offensive force for the Bears, totaling with 41 home runs, 156 RBI, 150 runs scored and a .353 career batting average over four years. Reagan's Baylor teams enjoyed much success from 2006-09. The Bears were 152-82 with three NCAA Tournament appearances, one trip to the Women's College World Series and one Big 12 title.
As a freshman in 2006, she was named a second-team NFCA All-American after starring in 58 games while hitting .355 with 44 RBI and career highs of 12 home runs and 46 runs scored. Reagan followed that with a stellar sophomore campaign, earning third-team NFCA All-America honors. In 2007, she hit. 341 and tallied 10 homers, 44 runs scored and a career-best 46 RBI. Reagan posted her highest batting average in 2008, hitting .385, and was recognized as a third-team NFCA All-America. As a junior she hit 10 home runs, drove in 36 runs and scored 35 runs. As a senior in 2009, Reagan closed out her career with another exceptional season, posting a .333 batting average, nine home runs, 30 RBI and 25 runs scored. She was named Baylor's 2009 Female Athlete of the Year.
Reagan was selected by the Philadelphia Force with the fourth overall pick in the 2009 National Pro Fastpitch Senior Draft.
The Tomball, Texas, native received a bachelor of science education in general studies from Baylor in 2009.
Reagan will replace former assistant coach Laura Taylor. Taylor, who served St. John's softball from 2006-2009, recently accepted the position of National Director of Softball Operations for Frozen Ropes, a national baseball and softball training organization. Working with St. John's hitters, Taylor played a major role in the development and improvement of former STJ standout Roxy Struble and current Red Storm catcher and NFCA All-Region honoree Kacee Cox.
"We are grateful for the hard work that Laura put into the program and will certainly miss her," Kvilhaug said. "We do wish her all the best in her position as National Director of Softball Operations at Frozen Ropes. She is a great person and will certainly do well in her future endeavors."
