QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's baseball program hosted its 13th Annual Bullpen Golf Outing at The Garden City Country Club in Garden City, N.Y. The event, with title sponsor Chartwells, raised more than $30,000 to benefit the Red Storm baseball program.
"The Bullpen Golf Outing continues to grow each year," said head coach Ed Blankmeyer. "Though I could not be at this year's event due to my engagements with the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team, I want to thank all of the alumni and followers of St. John's baseball for their continued support."
The "Coach Jack Kaiser Baseball Advocate Award" was presented at the event to Ed Lawrence. This award is the highest honor that the St. John's baseball program bestows upon an alumnus, friend, benefactor, parent, coach or fan. The individual possesses the same characteristics as Coach Kaiser: loyalty, dedication, hard work, and exceptional support of the baseball program.
Lawrence, a 1968 St. John's graduate, served as the manager of the baseball team from 1964-1968, supporting both the 1966 and 1968 College World Series teams. Lawrence received his MBA in Finance from St. John's in 1972 and began his career on Wall Street and later spent 17 years as the Chief Investment Officer at Roosevelt Savings Bank. Lawrence continues to be a part of the St. John's family, giving back to his alma mater as a professor teaching micro and macro economics as well as financial management, and is a continued supporter of the Red White Club, the baseball program and the Jack Kaiser Initiative.
A special 50th anniversary presentation honoring the 1960 College World Series team was next on the schedule of events. Following a slideshow that featured pictures from Omaha and news clippings from that memorable season, Jack Kaiser and Lou Carnesseca presented the members of the 1960 team in attendance with baseballs signed by their fellow teammates.
"It was very emotional and inspirational for all of us," said Kaiser. "Having so many members of the 1960 team come back to celebrate with and support the program is a truly great example of the St. John's spirit."
The outing was also sponsored by the following corporate partners: The Coca-Cola Bottling Co. of New York and the Tri-State Lincoln Mercury Dealers Association.
The St. John's baseball team advanced to its 33rd NCAA Tournament in 2010, defeating VCU, then-No. 22 Mississippi and then-No. 1 Virginia to advance to the Charlottesville Regional title game. The Red Storm also defeated then-No. 18 Connecticut to win its conference-record sixth BIG EAST Tournament crown. Jeremy Baltz, meanwhile, was named the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) and Louisville Slugger Freshman Player of the Year and became the first St. John's player to earn All-America honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA), Baseball America, Louisville Slugger and the NCBWA in the same season. Selected to the coaching staff of the USA Baseball Collegiate National Team prior to the season, Blankmeyer recorded his 500th career win and led the team to a school-record 43 wins.
