QUEENS, N.Y. - The National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) has released its 2010 preseason rankings and the St. John's men's soccer team comes in at No. 17. Akron comes in at No. 1, while the defending champion Virginia Cavaliers are No. 2 in the rankings.
The BIG EAST is well-represented in the preseason poll as USF (No. 16), Louisville (No. 20) and Connecticut (No. 22) all join St. John's in the Top-25, while Notre Dame received votes.
St. John's won its conference-record eighth BIG EAST Tournament crown in 2009, earning a first round bye in the NCAA Tournament and finishing the season with a 9-3-9 mark. A stingy defense posted 11 shutouts, while combining with a balanced offensive attack to help the team outscore the opposition, 25-11.
Among the returners for St. John's are Sverre Wegge Gundhus (5g, 8a), a first team All-BIG EAST selection, and Tadeu Terra (5g, 2a), a two-time All-BIG EAST honoree. Walter Hines (2g, 2a), the 2009 BIG EAST Tournament Most Outstanding Offensive Player, and Adam Himeno (3g, 1a) add to the offensive prowess, while Kyle Hoffer (2g, 0a) and Connor Lade (1g, 0a) control the backfield.
St. John's opens the 2010 season with a pair of games in Charlottesville, Va., as part of the University of Virginia Tournament. The Red Storm takes on Virginia Tech on Sept. 3 before playing the host Cavaliers on Sept. 5.
