MASSAPEQUA, N.Y. - The St. John's men's soccer team won the Supervisor's Challenge for the second-straight year, playing Hofstra to a scoreless draw in regulation before winning the exhibition match with a 4-3 shootout victory.
"Tonight was a great exhibition of college soccer with both teams playing well in front of a great crowd and creating opportunities," said head coach Dr. Dave Masur. "This is a great event put on by the Massapequa Soccer Club and we are happy to be a part of it."
With neither team able to find the back of the net in regulation, the game headed to a penalty kick shootout.
A quartet of Red Storm newcomers each found the back of the net for the Red Storm in the shootout as Bruce Ayala, Chris Lebo, Erik Opsahl and Ido Ligety all converted.
Having already hit the crossbar once, the Pride needed to convert in the fifth round to extend the shootout. Rafael Diaz, however, saved the effort and St. John's earned the shootout win by a 4-3 margin.
The event, which began in 2009, is put on by the town of Oyster Bay and the Massapequa Soccer Club. St. John's won the inaugural Supervisor's Challenge, defeating the Pride by a 2-0 score thanks to goals by Jimmy Mulligan, a product of the Massapequa youth program, and Sverre Wegge Gundhus.
St. John's continues exhibition play against Northwestern at 8 p.m. on Aug. 27. The game will be played at Stockton College.
