QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer junior goalkeeper Kristin Russell was named to the BIG EAST weekly honor roll on Monday, after posting two shut outs behind the goal line for the Red Storm in a 1-0-1 week.
Russell was named to the James Madison University/Comfort Inn Harrisonburg All-Tournament team with an eight save performance in 200 minutes of action. The junior allowed not one goal to be scored on St. John's in a close 1-0 victory over JMU and a 0-0 double-overtime tie against Virginia Commonwealth. Russell had five saves against James Madison and three against VCU.
The St. Petersburg, Fla., native is one of two goalkeepers to be mentioned on the weekly honor roll. She joins Rachel Barnette of Cincinnati who had a similar week. Taylor Vancil of Louisville was named Goalkeeper of the Week after a 2-0-0 week in goal. Both wins were shut out victories and she was named MVP of the Gamecock Courtyard Cup.
The accolade is Russell's sixth-career weekly honor as she was named BIG EAST Goalkeeper of the Week twice in 2009 and three times in 2008.
Russell's spot on the honor roll is the first weekly mention for the St. John's women's soccer team.
Going into this weekend's games against Fordham (Fri., Sept. 3 at 4:30 p.m.) and Rhode Island (Sun., Sept. 5 at 1 p.m.), Russell is 1-2-1 between the pipes for the Red Storm.
St. John's leads the conference in saves with a 5.25 average in four games played. Russell leads the conference in saves (20) and saves per game (5.00). Russell is fourth in the league in shutouts per game (0.50).
