WEST POINT, N.Y. - Junior Joanna Zwirbulis was one of the Red Storm's top performers this weekend as the St. John's women's tennis team wrapped up play at the West Point Eastern Invitational on Sunday afternoon. The tournament was St. John's second tournament of the 2010 fall season.
After dropping her opening match of the invitational, Zwirbulis rebounded to win her next four matches including the consolation bracket championship of the "A" singles draw. Zwirbulis defeated West Virginia's Ashley Pilsbury 8-0 and then followed by ousting Connecticut's Emily Herb 8-6 in the quarterfinals.
The junior then defeated third-seeded Yuliana Motyl of Massachusetts 8-4 to advance to the championship for a showdown with fourth-seeded Pui Wing-Sher from Seton Hall. Zwirbulis, who finished second last weekend in the "A" singles bracket at Columbia, took down her second ranked opponent of the tournament defeating Wing-Sher 8-2 to take the "A" consolation bracket crown.
Both "A" and "B" doubles teams performed well at the invitational, as Nakita Austin and Diamond Adams reached the semifinal round of the "B" doubles tournament. The other doubles squad, composed of juniors Ece Firat and Jennifer Yonkus, were ousted in the second round of the "A" bracket but would go on to advance to the semifinals in the consolation round before losing to the eventual bracket winners from Army.
STJ's Alyssa Liantonio and Ksenia Mikhaylova also both reached the semifinals in their respective brackets. Liantonio reached the semis in the "D" singles consolation bracket, while Mikhaylova's run was ended in the semis of the one-on-one doubles gold division.
The Red Storm continue its fall schedule when it participates in the USTA Invite in Flushing, N.Y., from Friday, Oct. 9 - Oct. 11.
