KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C. -- The St. John's men's golf team shot a 320 (+32) after the first round of the Wendy's Kiawah Classic at Turtle Point Golf Course (Kiawah Island, S.C.) and currently is tied for 17th after the first round of play.
"We didn't play our best golf today, but there were some positive signs," head coach Frank Darby said. "We were the first off the tee, and it was cold and windy on an unfamiliar course, so I think the guys will bounce back better tomorrow."
One of those positive signs was senior Mark Costanza who is tied for 15th after a first-round 74(+2). Another sign is the play of the team on the back nine, as three Red Storm players shot better on the back nine than they did the first nine holes. Costanza highlighted the day with a two-under 34 on the back nine after getting a feel for the course on the front nine.
Sophomore Ryan McCormick shot a 79(+7) in the first round, junior Jeremy Quinn shot an 83(+11) and freshman Dylan Crowley shot an 84(+12) for St. John's.
The tournament, which runs through Tuesday, features 72 holes, and plenty of time for the Red Storm to climb back up through the standings to finish the fall season.
"We get a little bit later tee time tomorrow, which should help the wind a little bit, and I think the guys will be a little more prepared for the course and will come out strong," Darby said.
The Red Storm tees off tomorrow starting at 10:54 a.m. with players from George Washington and Butler.
