KIAWAH ISLAND, S.C.- The St. John's men's golf team finished their 2011 fall season on Tuesday Nov. 1, shooting a team score of 310(+22), placing 14th at the Wendy's Kiawah Classic. Sophomore Ryan McCormick placed 15th overall after shooting a 76 in the third round.
"We battled some tough winds, especially during the first round and today, so I think we could have played better," McCormick said. "We know what we need to work on to continue to get better, and we're going to do that between now and the spring season."
Senior Mark Costanza, who was the team leader after the first round, shot a 76(+4) in the third round, while junior Jeremy Quinn shot a 78(+6) and freshman Dylan Crowley shot an 80(+8) to close their fall seasons.
"During the offseason we have an indoor facility called the Underdome that we go to and practice, where we go and just hit balls until our hands hurt," McCormick said. "We don't always have the luxury of hitting on the course during the winter months, so we try and get as much practice in as we can in the indoor facility."
On days that the Underdome might not be available, golfers in the past have put pads on the walls in an on-campus auxiliary gym and hit against the wall. Others take the school's winter break to head to warmer climates and practice.
Crowley, who is from Southern California said he would appreciate being able to get out on the course when it gets cold in the Northeast. Costanza, who resides part-time in Florida, also enjoys being able to play on the course when other Northeast programs are confined indoors.
The Red Storm will release their spring schedule in the coming weeks. Stay tuned to RedStormSports.com for all the latest men's golf news, and follow the team (@STJ_MensGolf) on Twitter.
