FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - After being sent to the consolation bracket following a first round defeat at the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championships, St. John's men's tennis junior Vasko Mladenov rebounded in the back draw with a straight-set win over a nationally ranked top 50 opponent on Friday evening.
Mladenov lost a thrilling three-set match to Georgia Tech's Kevin King in the opening round of the tournament on Thursday, and was sent to the consolation bracket to face a familiar opponent in Texas A&M's Alexis Klegou. Klegou, the 42nd ranked player in the nation, lost his opening round matchup to Columbia's Haig Schneiderman in three frames.
A transfer from the University of Texas, Mladenov and Klegou were rivals in the Lone Star State. The now-local favorite took the opening set 6-4 over Klegou and then put an end to the Aggies' tournament with a convincing 6-2 victory in the second set.
Mladenov will now play the consolation bracket's second seed, Gonzalo Escobar of Texas Tech on Saturday at 11 a.m. Escobar, the 11th ranked player in the country, won his first round consolation draw 6-3, 6-4 over Pepperdine's Finn Tearney.
