FLUSHING MEADOWS, N.Y. - St. John's men's tennis junior Vasko Mladenov returned to action Saturday morning in the USTA/ITA National Indoor Championship and notched a straight-set 6-2, 7-6 (4) win over Texas Tech's Gonzalo Escobar to reach the tournament's consolation bracket semifinal round.
Mladenov dominated the nation's 11th ranked player in the opening set, claiming a 6-2 win, and held a 3-2 advantage in the second frame. Escobar came back to take a 5-4 lead on the local favorite, but Mladenov would rally to force a second-set tiebreak. Mladenov won the tiebreak 7-4 to take the second set 7-6(4) and advance to the semis.
The Red Storm junior took on Georgia's Sadio Doumbia later Saturday afternoon, but lost a tough 7-6(6), 7-5 match to the 24th-ranked player in the nation. Doumbia defeated USC's Daniel Nguyen 6-2, 0-6, 6-3 in the quarterfinals to reach the semis and would go on to lose to his teammate Wil Spencer in the consolation championship.
