QUEENS, N.Y. - Winners of six-straight contests, including five in BIG EAST play, the St. John's baseball team has entered the Collegiate Baseball Newspaper rankings at No. 30. The oldest college baseball poll in the country, Collegiate Baseball Newspaper has provided rankings since the 1957 season.
Ranked as high as No. 23 (Baseball America) in the preseason polls, St. John's (22-13, 10-4) currently sits in third place in the BIG EAST standings, 2.5 games behind first place Connecticut (13-2 BIG EAST) and 0.5 games behind second place Pittsburgh (11-4). The Red Storm currently ranks fourth in the conference in on-base percentage (.377) and home runs (19), fifth in average (.275), slugging percentage (.387), runs scored (217) and RBI (186), and seventh in doubles (60).
Collegiate Baseball Newspaper also announced that Kyle Hansen was named one of five national Players of the Week, as presented by Louisville Slugger. Hansen, who also earned BIG EAST Pitcher of the Week honors, racked up a career-high 15 strikeouts in his first-career complete game shutout, a 6-0 win against Notre Dame.
The righty scattered four hits, walked none and worked six 1-2-3 innings en route to becoming the first St. John's pitcher to post a complete game shutout since Matt Tosoni blanked Winthrop, 2-0, on Feb. 26, 2008. The 15-strikeout performance also marked the most since Anthony Varvaro had 17 against Pittsburgh on April 3, 2005.
St. John's returns to action on April 27, traveling to Hofstra for a 3 p.m. game.
