Amber Curry Named To All-BIG EAST First Team

LOUISVILLE, Ky. - Sophomore Amber Curry was named to the All-BIG EAST First Team as announced by the conference office Wednesday night.
Curry earned first team honors as the designated player/utility. She played six BIG EAST games at second base and 11 at shortstop. Curry was unstoppable in BIG EAST play. Her .479 batting average (23-of-48) over 17 conference games and ranked fourth in the league. Her .875 slugging percentage and her .554 on-base percentage ranked third and fourth, respectively. She also totaled four home runs, 15 RBI, five doubles, one triple, 11 runs, seven walks and three stolen bases. Curry was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll on April 18. Curry also had a 14-game hitting streak in BIG EAST play from April 2-30.
On the season, Curry led the Red Storm with a career-high .357 batting average (46-of-129) and 16 stolen bases. She also set career highs with seven home runs, 32 RBI, seven doubles, a .589 slugging percentage and a .417 on-base mark. She also tallied one triple, 24 runs and 13 walks. Her 16 stolen bases and .589 slugging percentage both ranked seventh in St. John's single-season records.
Curry becomes St. John's fifth All-BIG EAST First Team selection in program history and its first since Roxy Struble earned the same honors in 2009. Curry's selection also marks the third consecutive year that St. John's has been represented on the All-BIG EAST teams. Struble and Stacia Dopudja (Third Team) garnered All-BIG EAST honors in 2009 and Kacee Cox was named to the All-BIG EAST Second Team in 2010. Curry is St. John's seventh all-conference team honoree in head coach Amy Kvilhaug's five years at the helm.
St. John's finished the year 20-30 and 6-12 in the BIG EAST. The Red Storm enjoyed series sweeps over Seton Hall and Villanova, marking the first time since 2009 that the team swept at least two BIG EAST teams in one season.
St. John's biggest win of the year was its 11-5, season-opening victory over of No. 23 Florida State in the Seminole Kickoff Classic on Feb. 11. The victory was St. John's first win over a ranked opponent since defeating No. 14/16 Louisville in the second game of a doubleheader on March 28, 2009.
