QUEENS, N.Y. - First round draft pick and Brooks Wallace Award semifinalist Joe Panik and first team All-BIG EAST selection Kyle Hansen have each earned All-Northeast Region honors from the American Baseball Coaches Association (ABCA). Panik was named to the first team, while Hansen earned second team honors.
A second team Baseball America All-American and a third team Louisville Slugger All-American, Panik set new career-highs in batting average (.398), hits (90), doubles (19), home runs (10), RBI (57), slugging percentage (.642), on-base percentage (.509) and stolen bases (21).
The shortstop finished the regular season ranked in the top ten in the BIG EAST in average (tied for first), on-base percentage (first), slugging percentage (second), runs (tied for second), RBI (fourth), home runs (tied for fifth), doubles (tied for seventh) and stolen bases (eighth).
Hansen, who was a first team ABCA All-Northeast Region choice in 2010, was 8-7 with a 3.09 ERA and one save in 17 appearances, including 15 starts. The righty had 106 strikeouts in 107.2 innings, while limiting the opposition to a .223 batting average.
The sophomore had four double-digit strikeout performances, including a career-high 15 in a complete game shutout against Notre Dame, and allowed two earned runs or less in nine of his starts.
Hansen set a new-school record for innings pitched in a single season and also produced the sixth-best strikeout total in school history.
