QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's junior Patrice Casimir was selected to the BIG EAST Weekly honor roll by BIG EAST officials on Monday, after her standout defensive performance in a 1-0-1 week for the Red Storm women's soccer team.
The Rockville Center, N.Y. native tallied her first-career assist in St. John's 2-1 win at George Mason on Monday, Aug. 22. Casimir assisted Jen Leaverton's goal in the 12th minute after she rebounded Leaverton's initial shot on goal to setting up another attempt in the box.
The junior defender played 180 minutes in a two-game week against George Mason and Fordham (Aug. 26), helping St. John's keep opponents to just one goal. Casimir played 100 minutes in the double-overtime scoreless draw with Fordham on Friday, as part of a strong defensive line that limited the Rams to just one shot on goal on 11 shots. Her 100 minutes against Fordham was the most of any player on the defensive line.
The honor roll nod was a first for Casimir, who started four of nine games as a sophomore as she returned to the pitch after sitting out the first eight games with an injury. Casimir also started two games as a rookie on the Red Storm's 2009 NCAA Tournament team.
Casimir's weekly accolade is also the first for St. John's this season.
St. John's will travel to Charlottesville, Va., on Tuesday for a rematch of the Red Storm's 2009 NCAA Tournament game against No. 6/15 Virginia. Originally scheduled for Sunday, Aug. 28, the game has been rescheduled to Aug. 30 at 5 p.m., due to predicted inclement weather conditions from hurricane Irene.
