QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 15, 2011) - The St. John's men's golf team opens the 2011 season Friday, playing host to 17 other schools at the McLaughlin, held at the Bethpage Red Course (Farmingdale, N.Y.).
The McLaughlin will be the first of two events hosted by the Red Storm this fall, and the only tournament in which the team will play in the state of New York.
"The Red Course is in fine shape for this weekend, and we're hoping that allows us to go out and shoot some low numbers and play really well," head coach Frank Darby said.
The tournament is held at the historic Bethpage State Park, which hosted the 2002 and 2009 U.S. Open tournaments on the Black Course.
This year's field includes Bethune-Cookman, Columbia, Dartmouth, George Mason, Harvard, IUPUI, Johnson & Wales, Loyola (Md.), Princeton, Sacred Heart, Savannah State, Seattle, St. Thomas Aquinas, Temple, Western Florida, current BIG EAST rival Villanova, and future BIG EAST opponent Texas Christian.
"We've got a great tournament field, with teams from all over the country at the McLaughlin this year, and we're looking forward to an exciting tournament," Darby said.
Play begins on Friday at 8:30 a.m. with a shotgun start followed by 36 holes of consecutive play. Players will then be re-grouped for Saturday, with tee times beginning at 7:40 a.m. with the leaders teeing off last.
"Hopefully the weather won't be too cool tomorrow, and we're expecting that it will be a great event," Darby said.
At the 2010 McLaughlin, the Red Storm finished in 7th, with senior Mark Costanza tying for the team low with a tie for 17th place.
