QUEENS, N.Y. - A two-goal first half for Providence was the deciding factor in the St. John's women's soccer's BIG EAST opener on Thursday afternoon at Glay Field.
Providence (3-2-4, 1-0-0 BIG EAST) scored in the third minute as Laura DiClemente, the Friars leading scorer, tapped a cross pass set up by Courtney Collins five yards out of the net.
Senior Raelynne Lee from Lake Stevens, Wash., gave the Red Storm (4-3-1, 0-1-0 BIG EAST) its first shot of the game, looking for the tie 16 minutes later. Lee's attempt went high. Senior Jen Leavertoncame back with another shot in the 34th minute, but it went wide.
It was the Friars who got the ball in the net again, as Taylor Bartini headed in a shot from two yards out.
In the second half, sophomore Morgan Ritter started the Red Storm off with a shot in the first two minutes, but her attempt also went high. Classmate Michelle Iannacchinogave it a shot in the 61st minute, but her ball also went high.
With less than three minutes left in regulation, Ritter led off with a corner kick, but the Red Storm did not get a shot off.
St. John's will look to rebound from its lost on Sunday, Sept. 18 when the Red Storm hosts Connecticut in a 1 p.m. start. The Red Storm defeated the Huskies on their home field in 2010, after coming back from a 1-0 deficit. St. John's will welcome the Girls Scouts of America for Girl Scout Day! As well as the fan-clapper give-away.
