QUEENS, N.Y. (Sept. 18, 2011)- The St. John's men's golf team wrapped up the Red Storm-hosted McLaughlin with their best round of the tournament to open the 2011 fall season. The team shot a 283(+3) to move up one spot and claim fourth.
"We played well, but I think everybody knows that we could have done a little bit better each round," senior captain Mark Costanza said. "We're definitely happy to come out and get a top-five finish in our opening event, it's a good start to the season."
Individually, Costanza and junior Pat Wilson tied for the team lead, both carding 71 Saturday to shoot 210(E) for the tournament, tying them for 13th place.
Played at Bethpage State Park's Red Course (Farmingdale, N.Y.), the McLaughlin is the first of three tournaments that the Red Storm will host in the 2011-12 season.
"It's great to be able to stay close to home for our first tournament, and we couldn't have asked for better weather this weekend," Wilson said. "A lot of people think that Bethpage is our home course because we host this event every year, but we actually don't practice here before the McLaughlin, so we don't have much advantage over other teams."
Freshman Dylan Crowley recorded his best round of the tournament, carding a two-over 72.
"The first round, I was getting a feel of the course, and then the second round I played a little bit better," Crowley said. "I played a lot better today, even though I felt like I left a few shots out there, it was definitely my best round of the tournament. I know what I can work on from here."
The low man on the day for the Red Storm was sophomore Ryan McCormick with a 69, while junior Jeremy Quinn rounded out the scoring with a 77.
"Today definitely wasn't a great scoring day for a lot of the guys out there, the course was playing a little bit harder," McCormick said. "I left a few out there, but I'm pretty happy with a 69."
Up next for the Red Storm is the Hartford Hawk Invitational Sept. 26-27. For the latest men's golf updates log on to RedStormSports.com and follow the team (@STJ_mensgolf) on Twitter.
