QUEENS, N.Y.- The St. John's men's golf team will travel to their second tournament of the fall season, the Hartford Hawks Invitational, at Bulls Bridge Golf Club (South Kent, Conn.) Monday Sept. 26 and Tuesday Sept. 27.
The Red Storm returns to the Hartford-hosted tournament as the defending champion, after winning the 2010 event for the first team title in over two years.
"It's always a different mindset when you go to a tournament as defending champion," junior Pat Wilson said. "You know what worked the year before, so you have very specific goals to try and go out there and repeat."
Leading the way for the Red Storm last season was then-senior Evan Beirne, who tied for second in the individual competition. However, Wilson, sophomore Ryan McCormick, and senior Mark Costanza all registered Top-20 finishes in 2010, and know what to expect from the golf course.
"We definitely played well last weekend at the McLaughlin, and we were doing some of the right things," Wilson said. "However, it's about all five of us putting it together each round, and if that happens, we'll do really well."
The other teams competing in this year's tournament are Boston College, Brown, Bryant, Connecticut, Drexel, Fairfield, George Washington, Hofstra, Holy Cross, Lehigh, Loyola, Rhode Island, Sacramento State, Sacred Heart, and Towson. The Red Storm has already matched up against Loyola and Sacred Heart this year at the McLaughlin in their first tournament of the fall.
Monday will feature a shotgun start at 8:00 a.m. with the players playing 36-consecutive holes. Tuesday will conclude the tournament with the final 18 holes on the 6,532-yard course.
