Red Storm Ranked In NSCAA Regional Rankings Top 10

QUEENS, N.Y. - After a 2-1-0 week that included two shutout victories and a one-goal loss to then-No. 4 Virginia, St. John's women's soccer made its first appearance in the National Soccer Coaches Association of America (NSCAA) Northeast Regional Division I rankings, as the Red Storm enters the rankings at No. 10.
The Red Storm joins fellow BIG EAST opponents Notre Dame (1), Marquette (2), Villanova (4), Georgetown (5), Rutgers (6), Connecticut (7) and West Virginia (8) on the Northeast Regional poll; while Seton Hall is receiving votes.
At 3-2-1, the Red Storm tallied two BIG EAST Conference weekly awards on Monday with Megan Klement earning Defensive Player of the Week honors and Chelsey Martino being named BIG EAST Rookie of the Week. The Red Storm is second in the conference in shutouts (3) and saves (29) and senior goalkeeper Kristin Russell, who was named to the BIG EAST Honor Roll, is ranked in all six goalkeeping statistical categories. Russell leads the league in shutouts (3), is tied for first place in shutouts per game (.50), ranks third in saves (27), fifth in saves per game (4.50), seventh in save percentage (.771) and eighth in goals against average (1.29).
The last time St. John's earned BIG EAST Defensive Player of the Week honors was Tara Mendoza on Sept. 14, 2009. The Red Storm's last BIG EAST Rookie of the Week was Martino's teammate, Raelynne Lee on Sept. 19, 2007.
Up next, St. John's has the week off from game action before hosting Yale on Sunday, Sept. 11. Kick off is slated for 4 p.m. and will be aired live on StormTracker All-Access. Sunday's game against the Bulldogs is ROTC Day and military, FDNY and NYPD Appreciation night. All military, FDNY and NYPD personnel get a free ticket to the game when they show their ID at the ticket window.
