QUEENS, N.Y.--Men's golf head coach Frank Darby, who enters his 17th year at the helm of the program, announced the fall portion of the team schedule on Wednesday. The Red Storm will host a tournament in New York, and one in Florida while playing three-of-five fall competitions in the Northeast.
"We stay close to home the first three events, and the last two events, in Orlando and at Kiawah Island, put a good finish to the end of the fall season," Darby said. "We get to host at two great venues, with fine tournament feels."
The team will open the season on Long Island, hosting The McLaughlin at the Bethpage Red Course, Sept. 16-17. In 2010, the Red Storm finished tied for 7th at the McLaughlin, with returning senior Mark Costanza tying for the low score on the team, with a 17th place finish.
"The McLaughlin always has a strong field at a wonderful golf course," Darby said. "Bethpage has a lot of history, this will be the 45th year of the McLaughlin there, and we've had a great relationship with the people at Bethpage State Park."
Then the team will compete in the Hartford Hawks Invitational at Bulls Bridge Golf Club (South Kent, Conn.) Sept. 26-27, where the Red Storm will enter as defending champions, as all five golfers finished in the top-20 of the 2010 event.
"It will be nice going back to Bulls Bridge and defending our title from last year," Darby said. "It's a wonderful golf course, and a very well-run event."
The final Northeast tournament for St. John's comes at the Temple-hosted Big Five Invitational, Oct. 8-9, where the Red Storm will be competing for the third straight year. At the 2010 Big 5 Invitational, three STJ golfers finished in the top-20 to lead the Red Storm to a second-place team finish.
The second fall tournament hosted by St. John's will be the Mission Inn Classic, Oct. 21-23, held at El Campeon (Howey-in-the-Hills, Fla.). Last year the Red Storm took third place in the event, as recent alumnus Evan Beirne took home the individual title, and current sophomore Ryan McCormick tied for 10th.
"The Mission Inn Intercollegiate is a little different from the rest of our schedule, because it is three days of 18 holes," Darby said. "It's almost like a PGA tour stop. It's a sensational resort, with a great family feel. El Campeon has provided a pretty good test throughout the years."
The final tournament of the fall comes at Turtle Point Golf Club (Kiawah Island, S.C.), site of the Kiawah Intercollegiate Oct. 31-Nov. 1. This will be St. John's first time competing at the Kiawah Intercollegiate.
"Kiawah is where next year's Ryder Cup is, Charleston is a wonderful town, and it's been a great event throughout the years, so we're looking forward to participating there this year," Darby said.
