QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. John's softball team wrapped up its fall exhibition schedule over the weekend with victories over local rivals Manhattan and Wagner. The fall period, used to get in early practice and incorporate new arrivals to the team, showed some of the strengths of the Red Storm as it heads towards the spring.
"We spent a great deal of time working on the aspects of our game that we feel are going to be critical components to our success in the spring, and our athletes progressed and improved every single tournament," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "Our players have embraced the concepts we have introduced and consciously worked on everything we discussed in every game."
As a team, St. John's recorded a .276 batting average, with a .329 on-base percentage. Leading the way at the plate for the Red Storm was junior Jackie Reed, who posted a .478 average with four doubles, a triple and a home run while playing third base. Sophomore catcher Erin Burner also turned in a strong offensive performance, batting .476 with a home run and a pair of doubles.
Several newcomers also made a strong impact offensively for the Red Storm, as freshman Yvonne Rericha hit .364 batting near the top of the lineup. Classmate Courtney Budynas drew a team-high seven walks during the fall season en route to a .318 on-base percentage.
The St. John's pitching was dominant during the fall slate, compiling a team ERA of 0.26 over 54 innings of work. Freshman Tori Free pitched a team-high 17 innings, giving up just four hits, no walks, no runs and recording 14 strikeouts. Junior Ashley Beza threw a team-best 16 strikeouts over 14.2 innings of work. Junior Aleshia Link also threw 14.2 innings, giving up no runs with eight strikeouts. Sophomore Francesca Carrullo tossed 7.2 scoreless innings for the Red Storm with just four hits allowed, giving up no runs in the process.
"I am so proud of our team because of its level of play and desire to continually improve individually and as a whole, as well as prepare for the spring," Kvilhaug said. "I am also proud of the great leadership our newly appointed captains Chrissy Montez and Dominique Marcelino have been providing. This particular team has its eye on some great long term goals and has shown it is taking the right steps to achieve them."
The Red Storm will begin the 2013 season on February 8. Stay tuned to RedStormSports.com for the entire 2013 schedule, to be released in the coming weeks.
