Kvilhaug Announces 2013 Red Storm Softball Schedule

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's softball head coach Amy Kvilhaug unveiled the schedule for the 2013 season as the Red Storm looks to make its second-straight appearance in the BIG EAST softball tournament. The 56-game slate features 15 games against nine teams from the 2012 NCAA tournament.
"There are a lot of factors that we consider when constructing our schedule," Kvilhaug said. "First and foremost we look to prepare our team in the best possible way for postseason play. We also believe that having a strong strength of schedule, along with the tough matchups we will face in the BIG EAST, will help bolster our resume when it comes to postseason play."
The Red Storm will begin the season at the Georgia Southern Tournament Feb. 8-10, matching up with the 2012 SoCon Champion Eagles to open the season. St. John's will play Tennessee Tech on Saturday then face the host team for a second time that evening before wrapping up the season-opening tournament with a matchup against Akron on Sunday.
For the second time in three years, St. John's will be making a trip to Greenville, S.C. for the East Carolina-hosted Pirate Clash from Feb. 15-17. The Red Storm will face northeast rival St. Joseph's and ECU on Friday, then draw rematches with the same opponents on Saturday before facing BIG EAST rival Georgetown in a non-conference battle on Sunday.
During St. John's spring break, the Red Storm will head to California for a midweek doubleheader against San Jose State on Feb. 24 , before facing Santa Clara on Feb. 25. and rounding out the West Coast swing with a matchup at Pacific on Feb. 26.
The Red Storm will then head to the Easton Classic at the University of Alabama for another challenging tournament slate from March 1-2. After opening on Friday against Iowa State, St. John's will take on the defending national champion Crimson Tide in one of the marquee matchups of the schedule. On Saturday, the Red Storm will have a rematch against the Cyclones in the morning session before once again testing themselves against Alabama in the afternoon session.
The fourth tournament of the season will take the Red Storm to the University of Maryland for another five-game slate from March 8-10. Friday's action will see Kvilhaug's squad take on her former team Radford, where she coached for four years before coming to Queens. In the afternoon session on Friday, St. John's will take on the host Terrapins. Last season, the Red Storm met Maryland at the Citrus Classic as St. John's exploded for a season-high 11 runs in a six inning victory at the ESPN Wide World of Sports.
On Saturday in College Park, St. John's will face the Iowa Hawkeyes before playing Binghamton and finishing on Sunday with a matchup against Ohio State.
St. John's will make a quick trip back to New York City for a midweek doubleheader against local rival Manhattan in the Bronx on March 13 before heading to the nation's capital to close out the tournament portion of the schedule from March 16-17.
At the GWU Capitol Invite Tournament hosted by George Washington, St. John's will face Akron for the second time in 2013 on Saturday morning before a matchup with Drexel in the afternoon session. On Sunday, the Red Storm will square off against the Zips for a third time before closing out the tournament slate against the host Colonials.
The Red Storm will open BIG EAST play with a road trip to Pittsburgh for a three-game series March 23-24.
After 32 games on the road, the Red Storm will make its home-opener with a doubleheader on Thursday, March 28 against local rival Seton Hall. The Pirates and the Red Storm will finish the three-game series on Saturday, March 30.
St. John's will then head to Tampa for a midweek doubleheader April 3 against USF, marking the third and fourth games of the year against 2012 Women's College World Series participants and starting a stretch of eight-straight games against 2012 NCAA Tournament teams.
After facing the Bulls, the Red Storm will host defending BIG EAST regular season and tournament champion Louisville for a three-game series April 6-7. To wrap-up the four-game homestand, St. John's will host interborough rival and defending Northeastern Conference champion LIU Brooklyn on April 10.
Continuing the daunting stretch, the Red Storm will head east to Long Island-rival and defending Colonial Athletic Association champion Hofstra for another midweek matchup on April 11 before hosting defending MAAC champion Iona on April 13.
The Red Storm will continue the local swing with a midweek doubleheader against Fairleigh Dickinson on April 17 before heading to Connecticut for a three-game series from April 20-21 to begin a stretch of eight-straight conference games.
After the weekend set against the Huskies, St. John's will host six-straight home games beginning with a doubleheader against DePaul on April 24, followed by a three-game series against Rutgers April 27-28 at Red Storm Field. St. John's will wrap up the homestand with a midweek clash with Bronx-based rival Fordham on April 30.
To close out the regular season, the Red Storm will head to Philadelphia for a three-game series against Villanova May 4-5. The top-eight teams in the BIG EAST standings will advance to the 2013 BIG EAST Championship May 9-11 in Tampa, Fla., on the campus of USF.
