St. John's Rallies To Defeat CSU Bakersfield, 5-2

BAKERSFIELD, Calif. - After falling behind 1-0 in the second dual-match of its West Coast swing, the St. John's women's tennis team rallied to record five singles victories and defeat CSU Bakersfield, 5-2, to notch its first victory of the season on Wednesday afternoon at the Stockdale Country Club in Bakersfield, Calif.
St. John's (1-7) No. 2 doubles duo of Nevena Selakovic and Nakita Austin got things started with a perfect 8-0 victory, but the Roadrunners (0-7) went on to win the No. 1 and No. 3 doubles matchups to go ahead 1-0.
Sophomore Diamond Adams quickly leveled the match with a 6-0, 6-1 win at No. 2 singles, and Selakovic improved to a team-best 5-2 at the top slot with her third-straight singles victory, a 6-2, 6-2 win, to put STJ up 2-1 on CSUB.
The 'Runners leveled the match once again with a win at No. 6 singles, but senior Joanna Zwirbulis would start another Red Storm rally with a 6-2, 6-4 victory at the third flight. Freshman Lyubov Pogirbnyak earned her first win of the season and clinched the match for St. John's with a 6-4, 6-3 win at No. 5 singles.
Austin concluded the match with a hard-fought three-set win at the No. 4 singles position to put the final margin at 5-2. Austin won the opening set, 6-4, but lost the second by a 5-7 margin. The senior rebounded in the deciding set to take the tiebreaker, 10-8.
The Red Storm concludes its West Coast swing on Thursday, March 1 when it travels to Cal State Los Angeles (6-3). First serve against the Golden Eagles is slated for 4:30 p.m. ET.
