QUEENS, N.Y. -- St. John's senior catcher Kacee Cox was named the BIG EAST Player of the Week on Monday after posting tremendous numbers at the plate to help lead the Red Storm to a season-high seven game winning streak and a berth in the 2012 BIG EAST Championship.
The Simi Valley, Calif. native went 11-for-15 on the week for a .733 batting average and hit six home runs in the five-game week, for a slugging percentage of 2.000. She becomes the second Red Storm player to earn conference player of the week honors after junior infielder Chrissy Montez earned the accolade on April 2. Cox becomes just the 10th player in St. John's history to earn BIG EAST Player of the Week.
In the first game of the week against UConn, Cox went 3-for-3 with two home runs, a double, a walk and five RBI. In the second game of a doubleheader against the Huskies, Cox was again perfect at the plate, going 2-for-2 with two walks and her third bomb of the day. The final home run of the doubleheader was a walk-off shot that gave the Red Storm a 3-2 win in eight innings.
During the weekend at Rutgers, Cox opened the Saturday doubleheader with a 3-for-4 effort including her fourth home run of the week, a two-run shot in the first inning. In the second game, Cox continued her power surge hitting a solo home run that sailed over the left field wall, giving her 14 on the year, a new single-season record for Red Storm softball.
She finished the week with a 2-for-3 performance in the finale against Rutgers, giving the Red Storm an early lead with a two-run home run in the top of the first inning to lead the Johnnies to the series sweep and a berth in the conference tournament.
Cox now leads the BIG EAST in conference-only games in batting average (.481), slugging percentage (1.037), on-base percentage (.567), hits (26), RBI (22), home runs (8) and total bases (56). She and the Red Storm will be back in action on Saturday May 5, as they take on Louisville in a three-game series to close out the regular season.
