SOUTH BEND, Ind. (May 9, 2012)-- St. John's softball senior catcher Kacee Cox was named the 2012 BIG EAST Softball Player of the Year on Wednesday night as part of the conference's annual softball awards banquet as she and classmate Kristi Cady earned All-BIG EAST honors. Cox--who holds St. John's career marks in home runs and RBI--becomes the first Red Storm softball player to earn the conference player of the year honor in school history.
"I could not be happier for Kacee. The BIG EAST is filled with so many great athletes so this is truly an honor for her to earn this type of respect from the league," head coach Amy Kvilhaug said. "We are proud of the way Kacee has represented our program both on and off the field in her time at St. John's."
Cox was named the first-team All-BIG EAST catcher, while Cady was named a second-team All-BIG EAST outfielder. It was the second career all-conference selection for Cox and the first for Cady.
Cox led the league in conference-only games in batting average (.484), slugging percentage (.968), on-base percentage (.558), hits (30), home runs (8), total bases (60) and was second in walks (22). She set new St. John's single-season records with 15 home runs and 28 walks in 2012, and became the first player in Red Storm history to be named the Louisville Slugger Division I National Player of the Week on April 30.
Cady--who has increased her batting average by at least 30 points each year during her career--led the Red Storm with a .374 batting average during the season, with six home runs, five steals and a team-best 33 runs scored.
The sixth-seeded Red Storm and BIG EAST Player of the Year Cox will begin the 2012 BIG EAST Tournament with a matchup against No. 3 seed Syracuse on Thursday at 4 p.m. at Notre Dame's Melissa Cook Stadium.
