COLLEGE PARK, Md. - The St. John's women's soccer team played its final preseason contest on Monday night at No. 13 University of Maryland. The Terps defeated the Red Storm 2-0 at Ludwig Field.
The Terps scored their first goal in the eighth minute. Maryland scored again in the 83rd minute in a goal in a corner kick.
Junior goalkeeper Lauren Ferris played the first 58 minutes, while rookie Ellen Conway played the final 22 between the pipes.
Rookie Shelby Halász had the Red Storm's best chance to score as she played the Terp keeper through. But it was knocked away.
Head Coach Ian Stone was optimistic on the way the team played against the Terps and in all three of the scrimmages.
"During the past week, we were able to play all different styles and we were able to get better with each game," remarked Stone. "These last two exhibitions against Rider and Maryland allowed us get into the rhythm of the season; with playing two games with a day of rest in between. Against Maryland, we were able to highlight areas that we had talked about in practice. We were able to experience what we needed to work on in a game atmosphere instead of just trying to use it in concept. This will help us as we will be able to work on it at practice tomorrow and we're only going to get stronger because of it. As a team, we are getting together really well and I am looking forward to our first regular season game where the result actually counts for something."
The Red Storm women's soccer season will officially kick off on Friday, Aug. 17 with a home contest against George Mason at 7 p.m. The Red Storm and Patriots will be the first teams to experience the newly-surfaced Belson Stadium.
BIG EAST season will commence on Sept. 13. The Red Storm opens BIG EAST play against Providence at home under the lights of Belson at 7 p.m.
