Amy Marron Selected To 2012 Preseason All-BIG EAST Team

QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's soccer junior Amy Marron was one of 12 named to the 2012 All-BIG EAST Preseason Team, announced by officials from the BIG EAST Conference on Tuesday, coinciding with the release of the BIG EAST's preseason rankings.
Marron is the first Red Storm player since Natasha Lee in 2005 to earn a spot on the conference's preseason all-conference squad. Marron is one of eight juniors on preseason team, which is voted on by the 15 coaches in the league.
Christine Exeter, a junior forward from Louisville was voted as the 2012 Preseason Offensive Player of the Year; while Ally Miller, a senior defender from Marquette was named the BIG EAST's Defensive Player of the Year. Syracuse's Brittany Anghel and Villanova's Jami Kranich were selected as co-Goalkeepers of the Year.
As a sophomore in 2011, Marron was named to the All-BIG EAST second team. Moving from forward to midfield, Marron had three assists on the year, including the helper on teammate Jen Leaverton's goal that helped secure St. John's BIG EAST Tournament berth. As a rookie, Marron made an immediate impact on the Red Storm as she started 17 games. She was one of only three freshmen to play in all 18 games and led the squad in points (7) and goals (3), while adding an assists. For her young career, Marron has recorded 10 points and four assists.
In the Preseason Coaches Poll, St. John's was picked to finish sixth in the American Division. Marquette, ranked No. 16 in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason poll was picked No. 1 in the American Division with 13 first-place votes. Connecticut was picked to finish No. 2 and had two first-place votes. In the National Division, Notre Dame was the preseason favorite with 12 first-place votes. Louisville was picked second. Both teams received votes in the NSCAA/Continental Tire Preseason top 25, which was also released on Tuesday.
The St. John's women's soccer season will kick off on Friday, Aug. 17 with a home contest against George Mason at 7 p.m. The Red Storm and Patriots will be the first teams to experience the newly-surfaced Belson Stadium.
BIG EAST season will commence on Sept. 13. The Red Storm opens BIG EAST play against Providence at home under the lights of Belson at 7 p.m.
