QUEENS, N.Y. - The St. Johns softball team held the eighth-annual 100-out fundraiser game on Oct. 11 at Red Storm Field as the program continues to raise money for a new indoor batting facility.
The team split into two squads and played until 100 outs were recorded, utilizing the time to practice various in-game situations to help the Red Storm for the upcoming 2014 season.
"The 100-out fundraiser is one of the highlights of our fall season and serves many purposes. Not only do we promote it as a fundraiser for our program, but ultimately it is an opportunity for us to get quality work in as a team. It's actually really fun, too," said head coach Amy Kvilhaug. "For this year's game, we stressed the themes of focus, energy and communication which are three components we feel will be critical to our success in the spring."
"We created several situations to work on some tactical and intangible parts of the game - bunting, bunt defense, hit and runs, hitting to the right side, moving runners, taking leads, pitchers hitting spots, squeeze plays, communication, leadership and relays just to name a few."
Started in 2006, the 100-out fundraiser aims to help continue the tradition of softball excellence at St. John's. This year, Team Red and Team Storm squared off once again and Team Red pulled away with a 13-7 victory.
Team Red was made up of Ashley Beza, Aleshia Link, Alyssa Rusch, Erin Burner, Monique Landini, Carly Williams, Brittany Garcia, Yvonne Rericha, Shirley Chui, and Kaitlin Fitzgerald.
Team Storm featured Fran Carrullo, Grace Kramer, Kaitlyn Wilkens, Lexi Robles, Amber Korras, Jackie Reed, Ellen Czuba, Kelsey Moyer, Taylor Hill, and Mackenzie Cleary.
With a starting goal of $30,000 for phase one of a five-phase strategic plan, Coach Kvilhaug and the rest of the St. John's softball program are looking for help from fans, parents, and businesses to sponsor the team per-out or with a flat-fee donation. Heading into the event, the team is nearly halfway towards the $30,000 goal.
"On behalf of the program, I would like to thank everyone who has donated thus far and encourage those who have not to consider making a donation since this is an ongoing fundraising initiative," Kvilhaug added.
