EAST MEADOW, N.Y. - With intense winds and a thunderstorm brewing, senior Rachel Carpenter showed her seniority as she tied for first with a 75 (+3) in the opening round of the second-annual St. John's Invitational on Monday.
Carpenter wasn't alone however as another pair of Red Storm golfers worked their way into the top five to earn St. John's the top spot in the 12-team field. Harin Lee carded a 77 (+5) to tie for third while Stephanie Eybers stepped up and carded a 78 (+6) to tie for fifth.
Rounding out the team total of 313 (+25) was Jennifer Neville and Anna Kim who tied for 20th with an 83 (+11).
Competing as individuals, Cameron Lambertson tied for 17th after carding an 82 (+10) while Brittany Hurst finished the day with a 94 for 56th place overall.
Although St. John's team total of 313 currently puts them in first place, three groups were unable to finish the first round due to inclement weather and darkness and must finish out their round in the morning at 8 a.m.
Prior to the restart where Fairleight Dickinson, Sacred Heart, and Wagner College will conclude their first rounds on the final three holes, teams will begin teeing off of the first hole starting at 7:30 a.m. St. John's will look to defend their title as they tee off starting at 9:53 a.m.
