TEANECK, N.J. - Senior Ksenia Mikhaylova could not have notched her eighth victory of the spring in a more opportune moment as her three-set win at fifth singles propelled St. John's to a 4-3 non-conference win over Fairleigh Dickinson on Thursday afternoon.
With the overall score tied at three and the match at the No. 5 slot knotted at a set a piece, the St. Petersburg, Russia native delivered with a 6-2 win in the third set to clinch the match for the Red Storm (8-9).
After dropping doubles point, St. John's went on a tear with wins at first, second and third singles. The victory at the No. 1 slot was the fourth straight for senior Nevena Selakovic while freshman Amber Washington tallied her 10th win of the year with her 6-3, 7-5 decision at the No. 2 slot. Junior Diamond Adams picked up win number eight of the year with a straight set, 6-2, 6-3 decision at third singles.
The Red Storm, who had lost two of its last three coming into the match, snapped the Knights' five-match winning streak.
Taka Bertrand and her squad now head into the final weekend of the season where they will face off against two BIG EAST opponents on the road, Seton Hall on Saturday, April 13, and Providence on Sunday, April 14, each at 1 p.m.
