QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's track & field alumnae Priscilla Frederick and Jane Vongvorachoti each took part in their respective disciplines at the U.S.A. national championships over the weekend, with the pair posting impressive finishes against the nation's very best.
Competing at the 2013 USA Outdoor Track & Field Championships in Des Moines, Iowa, Frederick tied for 10th place in the women's high jump, clearing the bar at 1.79 meters (5 feet, 10.5 inches) on her second attempt, before bowing out of the competition. Frederick, a 2012 St. John's graduate who owns both the school indoor (1.82 meters) and outdoor (1.84 meters) high jump records, has now placed in the top 10 at the USA junior or senior track & field championships for six-consecutive years.
The top three finishers in each event in Des Moines qualified to represent Team USA at the 2013 International Athletics Association World Championships in Moscow, Russia.
At the USA Half-Marathon Championship in Duluth, Minn., Vongvorochoti, who competed on the Red Storm's cross country and track & field teams for one season in 2005-06, placed 32nd, covering the 13.1 mile distance in 1:17:15.1. She averaged 5:54 per mile, and finished 27th out of 46 in her age group.
"We are very proud of Priscilla and Jane for their performances at the USA championships this past weekend," said St. John's coach Jim Hurt. "Both have worked hard to be amongst the best in the country. We are very pleased to see them continue to compete after graduation and appreciate all their hard work and dedication to their sport."
Frederick, who currently competes as a member of the New York Athletic Club, was a four-time All-America selection while competing for the Red Storm. A Sicklerville, N.J. native, she set the indoor school high jump record in a 10th-place finish at the 2011 NCAA Championships and the outdoor program mark in the same event in a winning effort at the 2010 ECAC Championships. Frederick was also the 2011 BIG EAST indoor high jump champion and boasts the second fastest 60-meter hurdle time, indoor pentathlon and outdoor heptathlon performances in school history.
Last summer, Frederick competed at the U.S. Olympic Trials at historic Hayward Field in Eugene, Ore., matching a career-best with a clearance at 1.84 to tie for seventh. In May, Frederick placed seventh in the high jump at the 2013 adidas Grand Prix in New York City.
After transferring from Columbia University in 2004, Vongvorochoti also suited up for the Red Storm's women's soccer team, appearing in 32 games and starting in 17 with a goal and two assists.
