St. John's Opens 2013 Home Slate Against Siena

QUEENS, N.Y. - After beginning the season with a 2-1 record at the Colgate Classic, St. John's will look to defend Taffner Field House with its home opener against Siena on Monday, Sept. 2, at 1 p.m. Last season, the Red Storm also opened up its home slate with Siena, defeating the Saints in straight sets, 3-0. The match will be broadcast live on ESPN3 via SJU-TV and will be available in more than 85 million homes.

SCOUTING THE SAINTS
- Siena split in its opening two matches, defeating Coppin State, 3-1, and losing to Hofstra, 3-0, at the Hofstra Invitational.
- Senior Taylor Akana, last year's MAAC leader in kills (3.75 per set), has a team-high 3.43 kills per set average so far this season.
- Akana entered this season fourth among all Division I student-athletes in kills (1,361).
- Last season, the Saints went 21-11 and 14-4 in conference play. They lost, 3-2, in the MAAC Championships to Fairfield.
- St. John's handed Siena a 3-0 defeat in Carnesecca Arena on Aug. 29, 2012, which was the last meeting between the two schools.
- The Red Storm owns a 9-2 all-time record against the Saints and a 4-0 all-time record when playing them at home.
- Siena has not defeated St. John's since Oct. 22, 1994.
SUPER SOPHOMORES LEAD SJU AT COLGATE CLASSIC
- Sophomores Karin Palgutova, Amy Zimmer, Shawna-Lei Santos, and Deniz Mutlugil lead the Red Storm in kills, blocks, digs, and assists, respectively, at the Colgate Classic.
- Palgutova racked up 47 kills on 4.27 kills per set, while Zimmer had 15 blocks on 1.36 blocks per set.
- Santos had 51 digs on a 4.64 per set average, while Mutlugil posted 110 assists on a 10 per set average.
- The sophomore quartet helped guide St. John's to a win over Central Connecticut and 2012 NCAA Tournament participant Binghamton.
UP NEXT
St. John's will travel to Durham, N.H. to play in the Holly Young Invitational, which begins on Friday, Sept. 6. The Red Storm will take on Missouri State on the first day and will play Brown and host school New Hampshire on Saturday, Sept. 7.
