Red Storm Sweeps Troy, Loses To Connecticut, 3-0

ATLANTA, Ga. - St. John's split its final two matches of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic, defeating Troy, 3-0 (25-22, 25-13, 25-21), and losing to UConn, 3-0 (25-23, 25-23, 25-20). Junior Aleksandra Wachowicz and sophomore Karin Palgutova were named to the All-Tournament Team. During the weekend, Palgutova collected two double-doubles, recording 4.30 kills per set on a .243 hitting percentage, while adding 3.30 digs per set. Wachowicz had 3.90 kills per set on a .301 hitting percentage and picked up 1.70 digs per set. The Red Storm went 2-1 during the weekend to move to 7-4 on the season.
UCONN RECAP
The Huskies were able to separate themselves from the Red Storm late in each set to pull of the 3-0 win (25-23, 25-23, 25-20). UConn edged St. John's in hitting percentage (.248 to .202), but St. John's collected more blocks (7.0 to 6.0).
After trailing 21-16 in the first set, St. John's nearly pulled off a comeback victory, going on a 6-2 run to narrow UConn's lead to 23-22. The Huskies notched set-point on the next play, but Wachowicz answered by cutting the UConn lead to one point with a kill. However, on the next play, a Huskies kill gave them a 25-23 first set win.
UConn won another close one in the second set. With the score knotted at 21-21, the Red Storm and Huskies traded point-for-point until UConn broke a 23-23 tie with two-straight points to win the set, 25-23.
The Huskies also ended the third set with back-to-back points. With the Red Storm trailing 23-20, a pair of attack errors allowed UConn to win, 25-20.
Palgutova led the match with 17 kills on a .270 hitting percentage. She also narrowly missed a double-double with nine digs.
Sophomores Deniz Mutlugil and Shawna-Lei Santos tied for the match lead in assists and digs, respectively. Mutlugil recorded 36 assists, while adding three digs, and Santos had 14 digs, while adding a pair of service aces.
Wachowicz had nine kills and eight digs, while adding a pair of blocks. Her classmate junior Ashley Boursiquot held the team lead for blocks with four.
Freshman Mona Karkkainen had a career-high seven kills on 12 attempts, with just one error. She also added a pair of blocks.
TROY RECAP
St. John's won its final match of the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic with a sweep of Troy (25-22, 25-13, 25-21). The Red Storm hit .291 as a team, while the Trojans were held to a .000 hitting percentage. St. John's also out-blocked Troy, 12.0 to 3.0.
The Red Storm came back from a three-point deficit late in the first set to go up 1-0 in the match. Trailing, 20-17, St. John's used kill from sophomore Yaidy Santiago, a kill from Karkkainen, and a pair of Troy attack errors to go up, 21-20. The Trojans promptly tied the set back up, but back-to-back kills by Boursiquot put St. John's up 23-21. Ultimately, another Trojans attack error gave the Red Storm a 25-22 first set win.
The rest of the match then quickly shifted in the favor of the Red Storm. With the score tied 1-1 in the second set, St. John's took the lead with three-straight points and never allowed Troy to take the lead or tie the score for the remainder of the match. After Boursiquot notched seven kills in the second set to help lead the Red Storm to 25-13 win, Palgutova and Wachowicz took over the third set, combining for 13 kills and an ace in the 25-21 win.
Palgutova collected her third double-double of the season and second of the weekend with a 12 kill, 11 dig effort. The native of Bratislava, Slovakia, also recorded an ace and a block. Wachowicz tied with Palgutova for the match-lead in kills, racking up 12 on a .333 hitting percentage, while adding five digs.
Santos had a team-high 12 digs and a career-high seven assists, while adding an ace. Her classmate Mutlugil had a match-high 31 digs and contributed six digs and four blocks.
Boursiquot and sophomore Amy Zimmer tied for the match lead in blocks with six. Boursiquot had two solo blocks and four block assists, while racking up eight kills. Zimmer had six block assists and five kills.
Junior Morgan Thomas had the third-most digs on the squad with eight.
UP NEXT
St. John's will host Fordham - its cross-town rival from the Bronx, N.Y. - on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm is 16-1 all-time versus the Rams and has won their last 11 meetings.
