PRINCETON, N.J. - Sophomore Vaidik Munshaw and senior Gary Kushnirovich each picked up singles titles on Sunday, Sept. 15, at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational, their first titles as members of the St. John's men's tennis team.
The newcomers both won their championship matches in straight sets with Munshaw defeating Cornell's Colin Sinclair, 6-4, 6-3, in the Cordish Draw and Kushnirovich claiming the Nassau Draw, 6-3, 6-5, over Matt Nardella of Penn.
After receiving a bye in the first round, Munshaw proceeded to knock off Fredy Marcinkowski of Monmouth, 6-0, 6-2, and Columbia's Bert Vancura, 6-0, 6-4, to advance to the finals. The Ahmadabad, India native won all of his singles matches in straight sets at the Farnsworth. Kushnirovich, a native of Brooklyn, N.Y., defeated opponents from FDU, Princeton, Columbia and Penn en route to winning his flight.
It marked the first time since Oct. 1999 at the UConn Invitational that the Red Storm returned to Queens with more than one player winning their singles flight. At the UConn Invitational, Eric Scharf, Andre Vanier and Cameron Lore each won their draws.
"Overall it was a good weekend for us," said head coach Eric Rebhuhn. "We still have some things to improve, but the team is looking good and we're confident that we'll have a great fall season."
Sophomore Michael-John Every reached the semifinals of his singles flight for the second consecutive year at the Farnsworth, topping Jason Simon of Buffalo, 6-1, 6-5(3), and Thomas Lieb of NYIT, 6-3, 6-3, in the Jadwin Draw.
Also making noise in their first fall tournament were freshman Freddy Ruiz Acevedo and sophomore R.J. Del Nunzio who each reached the semifinals of their respective consolation brackets.
Next weekend, Oct. 20-22, Rebhuhn will be sending representatives to the Yale Classic in New Haven, Conn. and the USTA Men's College Invitational at the National Tennis Center, the home court of the Red Storm.
