Karin Palgutova Named BIG EAST Player Of The Week

QUEENS, N.Y. - Sophomore Karin Palgutova was named BIG EAST Player of the Week as announced by the conference office on Monday evening. In a 3-1 week for the Red Storm, Palgutova racked up 4.46 kills per set and 5.12 kills per set to move into first place in the BIG EAST in both categories. She now has 4.30 kills per set and 4.86 points per set on the season, which rank 19th and 22nd in the NCAA, respectively.
Palgutova also collected a pair of double-doubles during the Georgia Tech Courtyard Classic to up her season count to three. Her first double-double came in a 3-1 win over Georgia Tech (14 kills, 13 digs) and the second came in a 3-0 win over Troy (12 kills, 11 digs). The Red Storm went 2-1 during the event to place second. Palgutova and teammate junior Aleksandra Wachowicz received All-Tournament honors.
The native of Bratislava, Slovakia, also recorded 2.92 digs per set and 0.77 blocks per set. She held the match lead in kills in three out of the Red Storm's four matches and posted a match-high five blocks (two solo) in the win over Georgia Tech.
This is Palgutova's first-career BIG EAST Player of the Week honor. The last member of the Red Storm to be named BIG EAST Player of the Week was Darlene Ramdin, who did so on Sept. 7, 2009.
UP NEXT
St. John's will host Fordham - its cross-town rival from the Bronx, N.Y. - on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7 p.m. in Carnesecca Arena. The Red Storm is 16-1 all-time versus the Rams and has won the last 11 meetings. Admission is free and the match will air on ESPN3.
