NEW HAVEN, Conn. - After having two new players win singles titles at the Princeton/Farnsworth Invitational last weekend, two more newcomers to the St. John's men's tennis team, sophomores R.J. Del Nunzio and Erick Reyes, recorded standout performances at the Ivy Plus Invitational in New Haven, Conn. this past weekend.
Del Nunzio, a native of New York, N.Y., began the tournament by topping Andrew Ball of Harvard in straight sets, 6-5, 6-3, and Binghamton's Eliot Hureau, 6-3, 6-0. Cornell's Colin Sinclair would go on to grind out a three-set win in Draw C that ended Del Nunzio's run.
Reyes knocked off Old Dominion's Zvonimir Podvinski with two doughnut sets, 6-0, 6-0, while also defeating Daniel Faierman of Yale in straight sets, 6-4, 6-4. Reyes would fall in the semifinals to Max Schnur of Columbia, 6-3, 6-3.
The classmates also advanced to the finals of the top doubles draw where they rattled off three straight victories over opponents from Columbia, Marist and Old Dominion. Harvard's Denis Nguyen and Casey MacMaster, who are currently ranked No. 20 in the ITA Doubles Rankings, were given all they had by the Red Storm duo before the Crimson pair took the title in a hard fought final, 8-7.
Next weekend, the Red Storm will travel to the City of Brotherly Love to compete in the Penn Invitational (Sept. 27-29).
