QUEENS, N.Y. - St. John's women's basketball junior forward Amber Thompson was named to the BIG EAST Weekly Honor Roll following back-to-back double-double performances in a pair of crucial conference victories for the Red Storm (10-5, 3-1 BIG EAST) over the past week.
Thompson, making her first-ever career appearance on the Honor Roll, kicked off her week by scoring 11 points and pulling down a game-high 12 rebounds in a home win over Creighton on Jan. 8, before posting a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double at DePaul this Saturday, Jan. 11. In the two games, Thompson shot 75.0 percent from both the field and charity stripe, making 9-of-12 field goal attempts and shooting 6-of-8 from the free-throw line. The forward also chipped in with one block against Creighton and two steals against DePaul.
Thompson, who has posted double-doubles in three of the last four games, now has four double-doubles this season and 11 in her Red Storm career. Saturday's double-double at DePaul was Thompson's third in three career games against the Blue Demons. This season, St. John's is 4-0 when the junior tallies a double-double and 6-2 when she records nine or more rebounds.
Additionally, senior guard Eugeneia McPherson was named College Sports Madness' BIG EAST Women's Basketball Player of the Week following the Red Storm's 2-0 week. McPherson scored 11 points against both Creighton and DePaul - shooting 3-of-6 from behind the 3-point arc - and tallied 10 assists over the two-game stretch, including a career-high eight in Saturday's victory.
St. John's returns to Queens to host Butler on Wednesday, Jan. 15 at 11:30 a.m. for the Red Storm's fourth-annual Field Trip Day.
