The History Of The Event
The 19-year old tournament recently changed its name to "The Cullum Invitational" in honor of the legendary CSUN men's golf coach Bill Cullum. In previous years, the tournament was known as "The Countrywide Invitational" and in 2006 was renamed "The Bill Cullum/Countrywide Invitational.
Cullum was the coach of the Matador men's team from 1965 to 1986 and won three NCAA Division II golf championships, finishing in second place in each event. In his time as coach of the Matadors, Cullum was named the NCAA College-Division Coach of the Year in 1969 and District Eight Coach of the Year in both 1970 and 1971.
Under Cullum's coaching, the Matadors won eight California Collegiate Athletic Association championships from 1969 to 1977, leading to Cullum's induction into the Golf Coaches Association of America (GCAA) Hall of Fame in 1989 and the CSUN Hall of Fame in 2012 after passing away on July 12, 2003.
